Showcase: Blue Squadron B-wings

These Blue Squadron B-wings were painted for a fellow member of NOVA Squadron. This was a full repaint but I didn't strip the existing paint because I don't find it necessary. I primed the model with Tamiya Surface Primer and then gave it a basecoat of Tamiya Flat White (XF-1) and Medium Grey (XF-20) mixed 1:1. The blue was achieved by basecoating with RMS Ultramarine Blue, highlighting with RMS Ultramarine Highlight, and then giving it a final highlight of RMS Ultramarine Highlight and VMA Light Sea Blue mixed 1:1. I used various greys for all of the other details before giving the models a coat of Future in preparation for a wash. I used MIG Productions Neutral Wash which is an enamel wash. Enamel washes work a lot like oil washes but the drying time is much faster and when it is dry, it can be wiped away like an oil wash. I also added some streaking with AK Interactive Streaking Grime and Rust Streaks (also enamels). After that had dried, I used some 502 Abteilung oil paint to discolor various panels... the result was pretty subtle and didn't photograph well. After everything was dry, I sealed it all in with some matte varnish. For the engines, I first sprayed the nozzles with VMA White and then sprayed a coat of Magenta Ghost Tint from the Miniatire range. The client was very pleased with them and is looking forward to putting them on the table in the upcoming Regionals!

Showcase: Space Wolves Grey Hunters

These are some Grey Hunters that are part of small Space Wolves commission for a client. Nothing too special about them, save for the pack leader with the thunder hammer; he has a standard that is attached with a magnet on his backpack but I forgot to put it on when I shot the pictures. I may end up re-shooting the pictures anyway because I'm not happy with how they turned out. The client was thrilled with the final result which is all that matters in the end.

WIP: Space Wolves "Runic Mountain" Bases

I finished the stone on the Secret Weapon Miniatures bases I am basing this Space Wolves commission on. They dark grey will be drybrushed with a couple of different lighter greys and then given an earth-toned pigment wash to simulate dirt. After the models are pinned to the bases, I will go back and add snow effects.

The stone was accomplished by priming the bases white. I then dabbed various colors of oil paint (umber, grey, brown-black, green, sienna) in a random pattern on the stoney areas and proceeded to mix all of the paints together. While the paint was still wet, I took an old t-shirt and wiped a majority of the oil paint away, leaving the mixed colors in the nooks and crannies. I dipped a rag in some white spirit to wipe away even more paint to let more of the white base coat show through on the more prominent edges.

WIP: Space Wolves Grey Hunters

The main colors on the armor are complete as are the shoulder pad colors. Next is the trim detail, transfers for the shoulder pads, and the pack markings. So far, these miniatures have been fun to paint and I really like this pale blue-grey color I used. The armor was primed grey, basecoated with VGC Sombre Grey, and the highlights were accomplished by slowly adding VGC Wolf Grey into the Sombre Grey, finishing it off with pure Wolf Grey for the final highlight. The yellow shoulder pads are primed white, basecoated with VMA Gold Yellow, shaded with VMA Burnt Umber, and highlighted with VMA Yellow over VMA White (to make the yellow brighter). The red shoulder pads were primed white, basecoated with VMA Italian Red, shaded with VMA Tank Brown, and highlighted with VMA Scarlet Red. The yellow pads will have the chapter logo and the red will have a black tribal design that I haven't decided on yet.

The Frost Blades were painted in my "standard" NMM power weapon scheme of white basecoat, VMA Light Blue, VMA French Blue, 1:1 mix of VMA Dark Sea Blue and VMA Black from lightest to dakest. I know this scheme is pretty much played out by now, but I still enjoy it and I think it will look quite nice on the completed model.

Studio Update: Personal Losses, Space Wolves, and the NOVA Open

So it's been a rough start to 2015 for me. I lost my beloved cat Chet on January 12 and a week later, my father-in-law John passed away unexpectedly on January 18. It goes without saying that my family was shocked and deeply saddened with John's passing, myself especially because I had intended on building him a 1/700 scale model (complete with the full compliment of brass etch) of the USS Mississippi (CGN-40) which was the last ship he served on during his time in the Navy. I wanted to have it done in time for Christmas, but my commissions took most of my hobby time so I kept putting it off. I thought about telling him what I was going to do, but I decided it was it would be better if it stayed a surprise and that I would give it to him for his birthday in July. I fully intend on finishing the model and will most likely end up giving it to my mother-in-law so she can display it with his flag after his burial. I will also place a large photo of it on his headstone at Arlington National Cemetery.
I have one commission currently in progress that I started a couple of weeks ago. I'm little behind schedule due to dealing with the fallout of the losses in my family, but I'm looking to getting back on track in the weeks to come. This is a squad of Grey Hunters that will compliment a squad of Blood Claws and a Stormfang gunship. They are base coated with VGC Sombre Grey and still need to be shaded and highlighted. I'm enjoying these models so far, I love the color and I think they models have a lot of personality.
In other news, I'm happy to report that I am registered for the NOVA Open this summer and I will be playing in the X-wing Championship (and also some other X-wing games if I can squeeze them in). This is my first gaming convention and I'm really looking forward to soaking up four days with other gaming and hobby enthusiasts from around the country (and the world!).

X-wing Miniatures In-house Tournament

"All wings report in."
We had an in-house tournament last night for fun with some of my buddies. This is what I flew:

  • Corran Horn (E-wing) + Advanced Sensors + Push The Limit + R2-D2
  • Wedge Antilles (X-wing) + Determination
  • Biggs Darklighter (X-wing)

I ended up going 3-1 on the night, beating a Whisper/TIE Advance list, a Whisper/Interceptor list, and a Decimator/Whisper list. My only loss came in a rematch against the Whisper/Advance list I had previously won against.

Against the Decimator/Whisper list, I managed to keep out of Whisper's arc and focus fire Chiraneau's Decimator down, although I lost Wedge and Biggs to him. Heavily damaged, I chased him down with Corran, regenerating shields and rolling phenomenal green dice, and finished him off right before time expired. It was definitely most hard fought win of the night and tons of fun! I would also like to add that the inclusion of Determination on Wedge saved his life in two different games... Not bad for one point! I'm looking forward to attending the Huzzah Hobbies tournament next week as well.

Chet; or mourning the loss of a friend

Chet & Gimli on their first day with us.
When my now-wife, Chrissie, moved into my apartment in 2006, we decided that we needed a cat. It made sense, considering we both grew up with cats in the house. Chrissie requested a grey kitten and so the search began. After driving to multiple shelters across Northern Virginia and coming up empty handed, I was on the verge of giving up until my cousin Cheryl found an add in the paper about kittens needing a home. I called her to confirm that she had a grey kitten, which she did, but also said someone else was interested. She told me that he has a brother and if we took both, she'd give us priority. It turns out she was a crazy cat lady so in reality, we saved them from living in a house with 30 other cats (that isn't an exaggeration either). It was the start of a friendship I will always remember.
Chet a couple days before he passed, snuggling on his blanket.
Other than his affection to my wife and I, Chet exemplified the typical aloofness of cats, not taking well to strangers or even our kids. He had a reputation with the veterinary clinic as being especially "spirited," and he came by that reputation honestly. However, in spite of all of that, he was a kind and loving cat, especially to me. He followed me around the house and would spend time in my lap every chance he got. No matter if I was watching TV, playing video games, or trying to paint some models, he had to find a way to sit in my lap. He had a habit of sleeping with his rear end nestled in my armpit, paws wrapped around my arm as if hugging it, and his head tucked in my hand. Just about every morning when I took a shower, he would sit on my folded towel and beg for sink water after I got out. He loved to headbutt me and 'make biscuits' on fluffy blankets. I was never closer to an animal than I was to Chet; I can honestly say that he was my best buddy.
How we spent most of our time together.
Chet hours before before his final journey.
Being a particularly large cat, weighing close to 18 pounds, we decided over the summer to put him on a stricter diet to help him shed some weight. It seemed to be working well because he had started to lose weight and began returning to a more appropriate weight. However, last month he decided to eat some fake Easter grass out of a gift bag my wife brought home. He had a habit of eating random things he found on the ground, and after I saw him vomit the grass out, I didn't think much of it. Within the week, I noticed that he was eating a lot less and eventually just about stopped eating altogether. Concerned that he might have a piece of fake grass bound in his stomach or intestines, I took him the the vet for an x-ray. The veterinarian said she saw some "clumping" in his intestines, but nothing too concerning. She recommended isolating him to ensure that he was eating and using the litter box. After a couple of miserable days stuck in one of our bathrooms, Chet had eaten some food with the help of an appetite stimulant and used the litter box (but not pooped, which was concerning to me). We let him out and he returned to his normal self. As the month wore on, I again noticed he wasn't eating and that his weight loss was increasing. This time, however, I decided to get a second opinion from another veterinarian. After they performed an exam, ran blood work, and received a copy of the previous clinic's x-rays, the veterinarian was able to determine that Chet had a large mass in his abdomen. The tumor was pressing against his intestines and was clearly visible in the previous clinic's x-rays (I know this, because they showed it to me) and our new veterinarian confirmed its existence with an ultrasound (which was complimentary and much appreciated). The blood work indicated that Chet was suffering from lymphoma. Our options were not good nor easy: subject Chet to more trips to the vet, more tests,  and possibly surgery and cancer treatments or humane euthanasia. We elected for the latter. As any pet owner can tell you, it is not an easy choice to make no matter how ill your pet is and this was no different. We chose Wednesday, January 14 as the date in order for me to finish my upcoming shift at work and to give us more time with him. After seeing his condition deteriorate over the weekend and finding someone to cover part of my shift at work, we decided to move his appointment to Monday afternoon.
Like all cats, Chet loved getting in boxes and bins!
Chet at the tender age of 4, shortly after we bought our first home.
In the days and hours leading up to his trip over the Rainbow Bridge, we made sure he got to spend his remaining time with us comfortable and content. He got to spend his last days snuggling on his favorite blanket, eating his favorite treat (ham), enjoying the effects of catnip (which he loved), and receiving endless love from his family. I wasn't ready for him to leave me and I know I will feel this pain for a long time to come. Our home and my heart are a little more empty now and I miss him dearly.
